More than five dozen medical device, diagnostic, and digital health startups have been selected for the 2024 MedTech Innovator accelerator program. The startups include two companies interviewed by Medical Design & Outsourcing in the past year: Flow Medical and The Shape Sensing Co. “Our accelerator has become the gold standard, thanks to our industry-leading track record of identifying and refining the most innovative medtech startups in the world,” MedTech Innovator founder and CEO Paul Grand said in a news release. “Since launching MedTech Innovator, our more than 600 graduates have received 310 FDA approvals and clearances and secured $8 billion in follow-on funding.” Approximately 1,300 startups applied for this year’s program. Major medtech firms including Asahi Intecc, BD, Dexcom, Edwards Lifesciences, Johnson & Johnson, NIPRO, Olympus, W. L. Gore & Associates and Zimmer Biomet helped narrow the pool down to this year’s class of 65 startups. (Credit: JAFAR AHMED on Unsplash) Researchers at the University of Cincinnati (UC) have joined a clinical study of ResQFoam, a device designed to treat deadly abdominal internal bleeding. UC Medical Centre is one of the few Level-1 Trauma Centres in the US selected to participate in the multicentre REVIVE (reducing exsanguination via in‐vivo expandable foam) study. ResQFoam is an injectable biomaterial that expands within the abdomen to provide pressure on internal organs to prevent bleeding. The device provides adequate time to bring the patient into the operating room, where the foam is easily removed before the surgery. REVIVE study is designed to show the safety, effectiveness, and benefit-risk pro ResQFoam for the in-hospital treatment of severe internal abdominal bleeding due to injury. UC Medical Centre College of Medicine general surgery section chief Timothy Pritts is leading the REVIVE clinical trial as principal investigator. Timothy Pritts said: “We hope to demonstrate that this foam can safely and effectively be used to help save lives, both in the hospital and on the battlefield.” ResQFoam was developed by the US-based medical technology company Arsenal Medical, with funding support from the US Department of Defence. In the REVIVE study, patients will receive an abdominal injection of two liquid polymers, which will react when they contact with each other, creating a hydrophobic foam that rapidly expands into the anatomy. Unlike traditional clinical studies, REVIVE will require physicians to begin experimental emergency treatment without first obtaining informed consent from the patient. Researchers will make all efforts to contact a family member of the participant to discuss the study and obtain their permission for the patient to be in the study. Pritts and his team will determine if the incoming patients are eligible for the study AND enrol the patients if they are considered eligible candidates. The enrolled participants will be closely monitored for the first 30 days of their hospital visit, and their outcomes will be used to determine the risks and benefits of the ResQFoam device.

The patient was embolised successfully under the open-label, multicentre NeoCast first-in-human clinical trial, said the US-based clinical-stage company. NeoCast is said to be the first-in-class, embolic biomaterial for neurovascular conditions. Arsenal Medical has designed the biomaterial to address the limitations of current embolic solutions for indications requiring deep penetration into the microvasculature. Developed with funds secured from the National Cancer Institute, NeoCast uses shear-thinning technology to reach the smallest vessels and obstruct blood flow to tumours, as well as damaged or diseased tissues. According to Arsenal Medical, the new biomaterial is simple to deploy and produces consistent performance. It also eliminates the harsh solvents that are typically present in today’s liquid embolics. The study’s primary investigator and Monash Health neurointerventionalist Lee-Anne Slater said: “NeoCast was responsive, controlled, and highly visible during injection, penetrating deep into and occluding the target vessels. “NeoCast is a promising solution for neurovascular applications that would benefit from penetration into the microvasculature such as chronic subdural hematomas and hypervascular tumours.” In order to facilitate surgical removal, the study is assessing the early safety and viability of NeoCast for the embolisation of a patient’s brain tumour.
