Introduction The Institute of Microbiology and Epidemiology was established in 1958 under the Academy of Military Medical Sciences of the Chinese People's Liberation Army (PLA). It consists of six research departments: Bacteriology, Virology, Infection, Immunization and Control, Epidemiology of Infectious Diseases, Analysis of Unknown Pathogens, and Vector Organisms and Biosafety Protection. The institute primarily engages in biomedical protection research to address biological hazards. It has become a leading force in national and military biosafety defense, tasked with scientific research for the nation and the PLA, supporting medical health in major military operations, dealing with stability maintenance and emergency responses, as well as ensuring biosafety during significant events. |
