Overview

A methanolic extract of ALNUS FIRMA barks (Betulaceae) significantly attenuated nitric oxide production in lipopolysaccharide-stimulated BV2 microglia. Two new compounds, characterized as 4-hydroxy-2,6-dimethoxyphenyl 6'- O-syringoyl- beta- D-glucopyranoside (1) and 4-hydroxy-2,6-dimethoxyphenyl 6'- O-vanilloyl- beta- D-glucopyranoside (2), were isolated from the barks of A. FIRMA using bioactivity-guided fractionation, together with two known phenolic glycosides (3, 4) and 11 known diarylheptanoids (5- 15). Among these compounds, 1- 4 and 6- 11 showed significant inhibitory effect on lipopolysaccharide-induced nitric oxide production in BV2 microglial cells at concentrations ranging from 10 microM to 100 microM.

A new secoiridoid glycoside characterized as (8 Z)-nuezhenide A along with five known glycosides, (8 E)-nuezhenide, (8 Z)-nuezhenide, oleonuezhenide, osmanthuside B and osmanthuside D, were isolated from the n-BuOH fraction of Ligustrum japonicum leaves. All six compounds significantly protected human neuroblastoma SH-SY5Y cells from 6-hydroxydopamine-induced neurotoxicity.

Ten phenylethanoid glycosides, forsythoside B, acteoside, 2'-acetylacteoside, poliumoside, brandioside, echinacoside, isoacteoside, cistanoside H and E-tubuloside E as well as a new compound, Z-tubuloside E, were isolated from the n-BuOH fraction of Callicarpa dichotoma Raeuschel (Verbenaceae) by bioactivity-guided fractionation using glutamate-injured primary cultures of rat cortical cells as a screening system. These phenylethanoid glycosides significantly attenuated glutamate-induced neurotoxicity at concentrations ranging from 0.1 to 10 microM.
