Efficient degradation of sulfadiazine via facilitated electron transfer by iron-carbon catalyst with highly exposed active sites

The inaccessible active sites, excessive metal leaching and radical mediated degradation pathway greatly hinder the performances of Fe-C composite catalyst oxidation process in the advanced oxidation water treatment. Herein, a facile method was developed to in situ growth of MIL-53 (Fe) on the powder active carbon (PAC) surface by a mild condition, which finally yields PAC supported Fe₃O₄@C particles (PAC@MOFs-2T) after heat treatment. The detailed characterizations indicate that the fine Fe₃O₄ particles encapsulated with carbon layers were evenly anchored on the PAC as active sites, which made the catalytic centers highly accessible for the peroxydisulfate activation and sulfadiazine degradation. In addition, the carbon layers, coated on the active sites could prevent the metal leaching during the catalytic process resulting in the high stability in a wide pH range. More attractively, the density functional theory (DFT) simulations and emperimental evidences further proved that the oxidation was dominated by a electron transfer process (ETP), during which, the peroxydisulfate (PDS) was adsorbed on Fe₃O₄ to form PDS∗ with high oxidation potential to initiate the ETP. Meanwhile, it was also demonstrated that the optimized sample PAC@MOFs-2T enriched with electron donating groups could selectively degrade the sulfadiazine, which avoid the negative impacts from the co-existed foreign ions and organic matters during the oxidation process. In addition, the toxicity analysis of intermediate products revealed that the sulfadiazine can be degradated into low-toxic or non-toxic products, which further permits viability of this ETP mediated advanced oxidation processes.

Comparison of a chemiluminescence immunoassay with LC–MS/MS in the determination of the plasma aldosterone concentration in patients with impaired renal function

PURPOSECompared with chemiluminescence immunoassay (CLIA), the quantification of the plasma aldosterone concentration (PAC) via liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) yields lower values. The extent to which this difference is exacerbated by a reduced glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) is unclear. Therefore, this study aims to assess the impact of renal insufficiency on PAC as measured by CLIA using LC-MS/MS as the reference method.METHODSIn subjects with a normal or reduced estimated eGFR, the PAC was measured using both LC-MS/MS and two different CLIA kits (Mindray and Liaison).RESULTSIn total, 383 patients were included in our study. Among them, 71 subjects had eGFRs > 90 (Group one), 79 had eGFRs range from 60 to 89 (Group two), 108 had eGFR range from 30 to 59 (Group three), 51 had eGFRs range from 15 to 29 (Group four), and 74 had eGFRs < 15 (Group five) ml/min per 1.73 m². In all the subjects, PAC as measured by CLIA [68.2 (37.1-122.1) pg/ml for Mindray, 109.0 (68.1-170.0) pg/ml for Liaison] were significantly higher than those measured by LC-MS/MS [47.2 (22.9-88.7) pg/ml]. PAC as measured by CLIA was positively correlated with PAC as measured by LC-MS/MS, but the correlation coefficient gradually decreased as eGFR decreased. Between the LC-MS/MS and Liaison CLIA kits, the difference in PAC values increased with reduced eGFR in groups one through five (76.8 %, 69.2 %, 113.2 %, 152.2 %, and 476.2 % for groups one through five, respectively). However, this difference increased only in Group five with the Mindray CLIA kit (46.4 %, 48.1 %, 45.7 %, 45.0 %, and 74.9 % for groups one through five, respectively).CONCLUSIONCLIA progressively overestimated PAC as eGFR decreased, particularly with the Liaison method, indicating the need for caution when interpreting these measurements in patients with impaired renal function. In patients with impaired renal function, LC‒MS/MS measurements for PAC are preferable.

Competition & UV254 projection in odorants vs natural organic matter adsorption onto activated carbon surfaces: Is the chemistry right?

Powdered activated carbon (PAC) adsorption remains an indispensable method for addressing odor problems in drinking water. While natural organic matter (NOM) is ubiquitous and competes strongly in deteriorating odorant adsorption capacity, it can also serve as a promising indicator for predicting odorant adsorption through online measurement. However, the impact of PAC surface chemistry on NOM competition and feasibility of prediction across various adsorbents are not well understood. Here, we examined the role of PAC properties (pore structure and surface chemistry) in the competitive adsorption between odorants and NOM components, aligned with the applicability assessment of using NOM optical properties for odorant adsorption projection across various PAC samples. Chemical oxidation and thermal treatment achieved considerable changes in surface functional group composition, alongside minimal changes in pore structure, of two typical PAC products with microporous/mesoporous pore characteristics. The effect of NOM interference on the reduction of odorant adsorption exhibited a similar level regardless of the PACs with different pore structure (average pore size of 1.7 nm vs. 4.2 nm). Surface modification increased the equilibrium adsorption capacity (q_e50) of odorants by 15.1 % to 146.4 % (thermal treatment) or decreased by -81.3 % to -34.1 % (chemical oxidation), respectively, but minimal changes in odorant-NOM selectivity. For various odorants, hydrophobicity (log D) influenced the adsorption capacity while the structural flexibility (reflected by the rotatable bonds) affected the vulnerability of odorant adsorption to NOM competition. It was found for the first time that four-parameter Richards model (RMSE = 2.6 %) is superior to the linear model (RMSE = 12.5 %) or logarithmic model (RMSE = 77.6 %) to describe the S-shape UV₂₅₄ projection curves associated with odorant adsorption on PAC. Moreover, the feasibility was confirmed to use UV₂₅₄ projection curves of pristine PAC fitted with the Richards model to predict the odorant adsorption on surface-modified PAC in two different surface waters (RMSE 9.2 % and 7.4 %, respectively). This study provides insight into the role of PAC surface chemistry and pore characteristics in odorant adsorption in NOM-containing waters and enhances the feasibility of the NOM surrogate model for odorant monitor and control during PAC adsorption.
