THURSDAY, Aug. 3, 2023 -- There is genetic evidence supporting a causal effect of diastolic blood pressure (DBP) on benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), according to a study published online July 16 in The Prostate . Kaikai Lv, M.D., from The Chinese People's Liberation Army General Hospital in Beijing, and colleagues conducted a two-sample Mendelian randomization (MR) study to examine the causality of metabolic syndrome (MetS) and its components on BPH using summary-level data from genome-wide association studies. Data were included for 26,358 BPH cases and 110,070 controls. The researchers observed significant positive associations for genetically predicted waist circumference and DBP with BPH risk. No causal effect was seen for MetS, systolic blood pressure, triglycerides, high-density lipoprotein, or fasting blood glucose on BPH. The risk effect of DBP on BPH persisted after conditioning with waist circumference in the multivariable MR analysis, but no significant association for waist circumference was observed. "Our MR study provides genetic evidence supporting the causal effect of DBP on BPH. However, the role of increased waist circumference in the risk of developing BPH requires further validation," the authors write. FRIDAY, July 28, 2023, 2023 -- Isometric exercises, such as wall sits and planks, are particularly effective at reducing resting blood pressure (BP), according to a review published online July 25 in the British Journal of Sports Medicine . Jamie J. Edwards, Ph.D., from Canterbury Christ Church University in the United Kingdom, and colleagues conducted a systematic literature review and meta-analysis on the impact of exercise training modes on resting BP. Included in the final analysis were 270 randomized controlled trials published between 1990 and February 2023, totaling 15,827 participants. The researchers observed significant reductions in resting systolic BP (SBP) and diastolic BP (DBP) following aerobic exercise training (−4.49/–2.53 mm Hg), dynamic resistance training (–4.55/–3.04 mm Hg), combined training (–6.04/–2.54 mm Hg), high-intensity interval training (–4.08/–2.50 mm Hg), and isometric exercise training (–8.24/–4.00 mm Hg). The rank order of effectiveness in a network meta-analysis for SBP was as follows: isometric exercise training (surface under the cumulative ranking curve [SUCRA]: 98.3 percent), combined training (SUCRA: 75.7 percent), dynamic resistance training (SUCRA: 46.1 percent), aerobic exercise training (SUCRA: 40.5 percent), and high-intensity interval training (SUCRA: 39.4 percent). Isometric wall squats and running were the most effective submodes for reducing SBP (SUCRA: 90.4 percent) and DBP (SUCRA: 91.3 percent), respectively. "These findings provide a comprehensive data-driven framework to support the development of new exercise guideline recommendations for the prevention and treatment of arterial hypertension," the authors write. BOSTON, Nov. 23, 2022 /PRNewswire/ -- A novel approach to the treatment of opioid use disorder called Dual-Brain Psychology (DBP) has received a Phase II grant for continued research after publication showing promising results in a Phase 1 trial of 40 participants with opioid use disorder over the course of 4 weeks with an average decrease in opioid cravings of 71%. The difference over a sham control was highly significant. Because of the success of the trial, the FDA has given the project Breakthrough Designation in order to expedite the approval process. One side has a more positive and mature outlook while the other is more negative, reactive, and childlike. Through therapy, the more mature side of the brain can help support the less mature side in order to help patients heal from trauma. Each brain hemisphere and its personality can be easily stimulated by asking patients to block their vision so they can see only out of the extreme left or right side. The light from one particular side activates the other side of the brain, allowing patients to access thoughts and emotions unique to that hemisphere of the brain. Another method of hemispheric stimulation is to place a special LED that emits near-infrared light over one hemisphere of the brain, which is called photobiomodulation, and to date has not had any significant side effects. This LED was used in the Phase I study and will be used in the Phase II study to begin shortly. This LED therapeutic intervention, if approved by the FDA, can be used alongside other therapy modalities such as Internal Family Systems, Dialectic Behavioral Therapy, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, EMDR, and psychodynamic psychotherapy to enhance the effectiveness of the treatment. Psychotherapy based on PBP, uses lateral vision, and in published case reports appears to be extremely effective for a majority of patients.
