Introduction

Catalyzes the oxidation of hydrogen sulfide with the help of a quinone, such as ubiquinone-10, giving rise to thiosulfate and ultimately to sulfane (molecular sulfur) atoms. Requires an additional electron acceptor; can use sulfite, sulfide or cyanide (in vitro) (PubMed:22852582). It is believed the in vivo electron acceptor is glutathione (PubMed:25225291, PubMed:29715001).

Mechanistic insights into Fe3O4-mediated inhibition of H2S gas production in sludge anaerobic digestion

The addition of iron-based conductive materials has been extensively validated as a highly effective approach to augment methane generation from anaerobic digestion (AD) process. In this work, it was additionally discovered that Fe₃O₄ notably suppressed the production of hazardous H₂S gas during sludge AD. As the addition of Fe₃O₄ increased from 0 to 20 g/L, the accumulative H₂S yields decreased by 89.2 % while the content of element sulfur and acid volatile sulfide (AVS) respectively increased by 55.0 % and 30.4 %. Mechanism analyses showed that the added Fe₃O₄ facilitated sludge conductive capacity, and boosted the efficiency of extracellular electron transfer, which accelerated the bioprocess of sulfide oxidation. Although Fe₃O₄ can chemically oxidize sulfide to elemental sulfur, microbial oxidation plays a major role in reducing H₂S accumulation. Moreover, the released iron ions reacted with soluble sulfide, which promoted the chemical equilibrium of sulfide species from H₂S to metal sulfide. Microbial analysis showed that some SRBs (i.e., Desulfomicrobium and Defluviicoccus) and SOB (i.e., Sulfuritalea) changed into keystone taxa (i.e., connectors and module hubs) in the reactor with Fe₃O₄ addition, showing that the functions of sulfate reduction and sulfur oxidation may play important roles in Fe₃O₄-present system. Fe₃O₄ presence also increased the content of functional genes encoding sulfide quinone reductase and flavocytochrome c sulfidedehydrogenase (e.g., Sqr and Fcc) that could oxidize sulfide to sulfur. The impact of other iron-based conductive material (i.e., zero-valent iron) was also verified, and the results showed that it could also significantly reduce H₂S production. These findings provide new insights into the effect of iron-based conductive materials on anaerobic process, especially sulfur conversion.

Bioelectricity drives transformation of nitrogen and perfluorooctanoic acid in constructed wetlands: Performances and mechanisms

In this study, constructed wetland-microbial fuel cell (CW-MFC) filled with modified basalt fiber (MBF) via iron modification was utilized for treating perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) containing sewage. Results showed the significant promotion by bioelectricity on ammonium and total nitrogen by 7.80-8.14 %. Although such enhancement was suppressed by PFOA, higher removal was still observed with closed circuit, and PFOA removal also increased by 9.05 %. Bioelectricity contributed to enrichment of bacteria involved in nitrifying (Nitrospira and Ellin6067), denitrifying (like Thauera and Dechloromonas), iron redox (Geobacter), and sulfate-reducing (Desulfobacter), aligned with up-regulated of functional genes, including amoA, narG , napA, narK, narS, nrfA, sulp and sqr. Enrichment of autohydrogenotrophic and sulfide-oxidizing autotrophic denitrifiers, and nitrate dependent iron oxidation bacteria by bioelectricity all promoted denitrification. Moreover, bioelectricity boosted relative abundance of organic compounds degradation enzymes, such as dehydrogenase, decarboxylase, and dehalogenase, supporting the enhancement on PFOA removal. Generally, PFOA was converted to short-chain perfluorocarboxylic acids (PFCAs) via decarboxylation, hydroxylation, HF elimination, hydrolysis, F^- elimination, C-C bond scission, and dehydration in CW-MFC. The final PFCAs-products determined was perfluorobutyric acid. This work estimated feasibility of treating PFOA containing sewage by CM-MFC, and offered new insights on enhancing mechanisms of nitrogen and PFOA conversion.

Effects of O2 on accumulation of nitrous and elemental sulfur and microbial community structure in double short-cut sulfur autotrophic denitrification system

Understanding the effect of O₂ on the accumulation characteristics of NO₂^--N and S⁰ in the sulfur autotrophic denitrification (DSSADN) system is crucial for enhancing the denitrification efficiency of partial nitrification-anammox using DSSADN. The results revealed that in an environment without O₂ entry, the NO₂^--N accumulation efficiency (NiAE) and S⁰ accumulation efficiency (S⁰AE) of the DSSADN system reached 89.40 % and 93.41 %, respectively. Once system entered O₂, ORP value kept increasing. When ORP increased to -59.9 mV (DO = 0.1 mg/L), soxB and nirK gene expression rose and as well NiAE and S⁰AE continuously decreased to 48.13 % and 29.35 %. When ORP was above 30.9 mV (DO >0.2 mg/L) but below 81.0 mV (DO<0.4 mg/L), narG gene expression reduced and the relatively high sqr gene expression allowed NiAE and S⁰AE remained at 45.08 % and 33.31 %. O₂ promoted the synergistic effect of Thiobacillus and Azoarcus without the proliferation of nitrite oxidizing bacteria.
