Introduction

Shows chemotactic activity for lymphocytes and monocytes but not neutrophils. Also shows potent myelosuppressive activity, suppresses proliferation of myeloid progenitor cells. Recombinant SCYA16 shows chemotactic activity for monocytes and THP-1 monocytes, but not for resting lymphocytes and neutrophils. Induces a calcium flux in THP-1 cells that were desensitized by prior expression to RANTES.

Formation of cognitive maps in large-scale environments by sensorimotor integration

Hippocampus in the mammalian brain supports navigation by building a cognitive map of the environment. However, only a few studies have investigated cognitive maps in large-scale arenas. To reveal the computational mechanisms underlying the formation of cognitive maps in large-scale environments, we propose a neural network model of the entorhinal-hippocampal neural circuit that integrates both spatial and non-spatial information. Spatial information is relayed from the grid units in medial entorhinal cortex (MEC) by integrating multimodal sensory-motor signals. Non-spatial, such as object, information is imparted from the visual units in lateral entorhinal cortex (LEC) by encoding visual scenes through a deep neural network. The synaptic weights from the grid units and the visual units to the place units in the hippocampus are learned by a competitive learning rule. We simulated the model in a large box maze. The place units in the model form irregularly-spaced multiple fields across the environment. When the strength of visual inputs is dominant, the responses of place units become conjunctive and egocentric. These results point to the key role of the hippocampus in balancing spatial and non-spatial information relayed via LEC and MEC.

The roles played by hsa-miR-223-5p and mutations in the S gene of SARS-CoV-2 in COVID-19

AbstractBackgroundIncreased proinflammatory molecules are a main reason for severe symptoms in patients infected with SARS-CoV-2. This study evaluated mutations in the S gene of SARS-CoV-2 and the expression of hsa-miR-223-5p, interleukin 2 receptor α (IL-2Rα), and CCL16 chemokine in hospitalized SARS-CoV-2 infected patients.DesignThis is a cross-sectional study.MethodsThis study included 75 SARS-CoV-2-infected patients with severe symptoms and 75 age-sex-matched healthy controls. Real-time polymerase chain reaction techniques were used to evaluate the expression levels of hsa-miR-223-5p, IL-2Rα, and CCL16 chemokine. The Sanger technique was used to sequence the S gene of SARS-CoV-2 from positions 23,274 to 23,641.ResultsThe relative expression of hsa-miR-223-5p was significantly increased whereas that of IL-2Rα was significantly decreased in the SARS-CoV-2 infected patients. Two mutations were found in the S gene of SARS-CoV-2 at positions 23,403 (p.Asp23403Gly) and 23,525 (p.His23525Tyr) of the S gene of SARS-CoV-2.ConclusionIncreased hsa-miR-223-5p may be a main cause for the downregulation of IL-2Rα, which is a main developer of T-regulatory lymphocytes. The mutations in the S gene of SARS-CoV-2-infected patients may affect immune responses to the molecule and alter the avidity of virus–human cell interactions.

Achieving ecological sustainability in European countries: Does low carbon energy lead to a carbon neutrality pathway?

The European Union (EU) recently intensified its focus on Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) to achieve its net-zero emissions target. Thus, climate action and access to clean energy have become prominent research topics. Previous studies have predominantly explored the individual impacts of nuclear and renewable energy on EU economies within the environmental Kuznets curve (EKC) hypothesis. Departing from this conventional approach, the present study examines the effect of low-carbon energy consumption (LEC) on environmental quality while controlling for ecological influences of natural resource rents (NAT) and foreign direct investment (FDI). The study adopts the CS-ARDL approach to analyze annual data from 1996 to 2022. This analysis is framed within a novel framework: the load capacity curve (LCC) hypothesis. The empirical assessment reveals the following findings: i) The LCC hypothesis is validated for EU economies, indicating that these countries are on a path towards achieving their net-zero emissions target. ii) LEC positively impacts the ecosystem. iii) FDI and NAT are found to degrade environmental quality. Given these findings, EU economies should continue to increase their LEC within the total energy mix. Environmental sustainability can be further supported by implementing green policies aimed at regulating NAT and FDI. In conclusion, this study offers policies that will put the EU on the zero-emission path within the framework of SDGs.
