Biological Glossary | What is Antisense?

2 min read

Antisense is a technique used in genetic research to inhibit gene expression. It involves the creation of a strand of nucleic acid (DNA, RNA or a chemical analogue) that will bind to the messenger RNA (mRNA) produced by that gene and inactivate it, effectively turning that gene "off". This technique is often used to understand the function of specific genes by observing what happens when they are not active. It can also be used in the development of drugs or treatments for diseases by blocking the production of harmful proteins.
