Sulfamethoxazole is used to treat bacterial infections such as urinary tract infections, bronchitis, and prostatitis. The drug works by binding to the dihydropteroate synthase (DHPS), an enzyme involved in bacterial folic acid synthesis. Sulfamethoxazole is known to cause side effects such as gastrointestinal disturbances (nausea, vomiting) and allergic skin reactions.
