A Prospective, Multi-center, Open, Randomized Clinical Study in Parallel Groups, for the Comparative Evaluation of Efficacy and Safety of Angal, Lozenges [Menthol], 1 mg + 5 mg (Sandoz d.d., Slovenia), and ANTI-ANGIN® FORMULA, Lozenges, 0,2 mg + 2 mg + 50 mg (LLC "Valeant", Russia) in Treatment of Patients With Uncomplicated Acute Infectious and Inflammatory Diseases of the Pharynx, Accompanied by a Sore Throat.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate no less therapeutic efficacy and safety of the Angal, lozenges [Menthol], 1 mg + 5 mg (Sandoz dd, Slovenia) compared to ANTI-ANGIN® FORMULA, lozenges, 0,2 mg + 2 mg + 50 mg (LLC "Valeant", Russia) in treatment of patients with uncomplicated acute infectious and inflammatory diseases of the pharynx, accompanied by a sore throat.

Multicentric Randomized Double Blind Double Dummy Placebo Controlled Clinical Trial for Assessment of Safety and Efficacy of a Echinacea/Sage Spray in Comparison to a Chlorhexidine/Lidocaine Spray in the Treatment of Acute Sore Throats

The aim of the study is to show non-inferiority of an echinacea/sage spray compared to a chlorhexidine/lidocaine-spray in the treatment of acute sore throat during five days of treatment.
Main outcome parameter is the non-inferiority in number of responders between the two treatment groups. A responder is defined as a reduction by 50% of the total baseline score taken prior to treatment start. The symptoms are assessed with a symptom score.

Quantification of 3,6-anhydro-galactose in red seaweed polysaccharides and their potential skin-whitening activity

This study determined the composition of the monosaccharide, 3, 6-anhydrogalactose (AnGal), in red algae and explored the potential whitening activity of the extract. Using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS), the AnGal composition of six different species of red seaweed (Porphyra haitanensis, Gracilaria chouae, Gracilaria blodgettii, Gracilaria lemaneiformis, Eucheuma galetinae, and Gelidium amansii) was successfully analyzed, revealing molar ratios ranging from 1.0:1.0 to 1.0:3.1 of AnGal and galactose (Gal), respectively. Employing the tyrosinase inhibition assay, the skin-whitening effect of AnGal red seaweed polysaccharides was determined. Polysaccharides from P. haitanensis, G. chouae, and G. blodgettii as well as their degradation products showed higher tyrosinase inhibitory activity (inhibition rates 24.2-26.8%). These results suggest that the GC-MS approach could conveniently be used in quality control or for the quantitative determination of AnGal and Gal in red seaweed polysaccharides as well as exploring their potential application in cosmetic and functional food products. The findings here exhibited that red seaweed polysaccharides and their degradation products were potential ingredients for cosmeceutical industries.

Echinacea/sage or chlorhexidine/lidocaine for treating acute sore throats: a randomized double-blind trial

BACKGROUNDThe aim of this trial was to assess the relative efficacy of a sage/echinacea spray and a chlorhexidine/lidocaine spray in the treatment of acute sore throats.METHODSThis was a multicenter, randomized, double-blind, double-dummy controlled trial carried out in eleven general practices in Switzerland. A total of 154 patients (133 analyzed in per protocol collective) at least 12 years old with acute sore throat present for not more than 72 hours prior to inclusion and with a throat score >/=6 participated in the study. They used either an echinacea/sage spray or a chlorhexidine/ lidocaine spray with two puffs every 2 hours, in a double-dummy blinded manner, up to 10 times daily until they were symptom-free, for a maximum of 5 days. The main outcome measures was the comparison of response rates during the first three days. A response was defined as a decrease of at least 50% of the total symptoms compared to baseline.RESULTSThe echinacea/sage treatment exhibited similar efficacy to the chlorhexidine/lidocaine treatment in reducing sore throat symptoms during the first 3 days (P(xCONCLUSIONAn echinacea/sage preparation is as efficacious and well tolerated as a chlorhexidine/lidocaine spray in the treatment of acute sore throats.
