Despite their importance for industry and pharmaceuticals applications, description of aqueous solutions that contain surfactants is still a challenging task in thermodn. modeling.As a first step towards a holistic modeling approach, which is also applicable for concentrated surfactant solutions, this work aimed to model the intrinsic behavior of surfactant mols.For this purpose, we applied hetero-segmented PC-SAFT as a group contribution method to build surfactant mols. from different groups, which sep. characterize the hydrophobic tail and the hydrophilic head of the surfactant.While the hydrophobic tail is modeled by the parameterization developed in the first part of this paper series (M. Rother, G. Sadowski, Fluid Phase Equilibrium 582 (2024)), this work focuses on extending the parameter matrix to model the hydrophilic head.We considered the surfactant classes C_iG₁, C_iE_j and MEGA-i.The parameters for the surfactant head groups were adjusted to sorption data of surfactant/alc. systems and to partition coefficients of the surfactants in n-alkane/water systems and n-alc./water systems.As a benchmark of the new parameterization, we modeled the critical micelle concentration as a function of temperature for these three surfactant classes using a newly developed, explicit equation for calculating this quantity.The results are in even quant. agreement with the exptl. data.

A novel inhibitory strategy of Leishmania major using Kluyveromyces lactis and Saccharomyces cerevisiae killer toxins

AIMLeishmaniasis is a globally prevalent parasitic disease that has drawn significant attention. Killer yeasts offer a novel biological control method, presenting a potential alternative for treating leishmaniasis. This study evaluates the antileishmanial activity of Kluyveromyces lactis and Saccharomyces cerevisiae killer toxins against Leishmania major.MATERIALS & METHODSKiller yeasts were isolated using the Well method. The genes encoding K2 and K.L killer toxins were identified by PCR, and the toxins were purified via SDS-PAGE. Antileishmanial and cytotoxic effects on L. major promastigotes and amastigotes were evaluated using the MTT assay.RESULTSThe first killer isolate was identified as Saccharomyces cerevisiae ZBAM (GenBank accession: OQ376749.1) and the second as Kluyveromyces lactis ZBAM (GenBank accession: OQ401036.1). IC50 values of K2 and K.L toxins against L. major promastigotes were significantly lower than Glucantime and Amphotericin B. The EC50 values at 24 hours for Glucantime, K2, and K.L were 11.83 ± 0.02 μg/ml, 2.35 ± 0.01 μg/ml, and 3.23 ± 0.03 μg/ml, respectively. The EC50 values for K2 and K.L against L. major amastigotes were also lower than Glucantime.CONCLUSIONThis is the first report of the antileishmanial effects of K2 and K.L toxins against L. major, suggesting these yeasts as promising candidates for biological leishmaniasis treatment.

Synergistic manipulation of the polymorphic structure and hydrophilicity of PVDF membranes based on the in-situ esterification reaction to prepare anti-fouling PVDF membranes

Improving the content of polar crystal phase and the hydrophilicity of PVDF membranes are proved the efficient ways to improve the enduringly anti-fouling ability of PVDF membranes.But synergistic manipulating the polymorphic structure and hydrophilicity of PVDF membranes is rarely reported so far.In this paper, the in-situ esterification reaction between styrene-maleic anhydride (SMA) and meglumine (MG) during nonsolvent induced phase separation (NIPS) process is found to simultaneously manipulate the polymorphic structure and hydrophilicity of PVDF membranes.The water contact angle of membranes is largely reduced from 95.8° to 31.2° with the increase in the MG adding amounts, proving that the hydrophilicity of PVDF membranes is notably improved.Moreover, the β-phase content is improved as the MG adding amounts increase due to the enhanced interactions between the -OH groups and the -CF₂ groups of PVDF through hydrogen bonds.As a result, a highly hydrophilic PVDF membrane with >90 % β-phase content is obtained.The durable antifouling testing reveals that the PVDF blend membranes possess lower flow decline ratio and higher flux recovery ratio compared with the virgin PVDF membranes, thus exhibiting better antifouling ability.The synergistic manipulation of hydrophilicity and crystalline phase of PVDF membranes might offer a paradigm shift in the design of high-performance separation membranes.
