Colonoscopy Preparation: Comparing Sennoside A+B and PM/Ca
Colonoscopy is a test used to examine the inside of the bowel. Proper bowel preparation is crucial because it helps doctors get a clear view during the procedure.
What is Sennoside A+B? Sennoside A+B is a type of laxative made from the senna plant. It works by stimulating the bowel to move and reducing the absorption of water, making it easier to pass stools. Research has shown that high doses of sennoside A+B can be effective for bowel preparation.
Sennoside A+B vs. PEG:
Some studies have found that sennoside A+B is more effective than PEG, another laxative, but can cause more abdominal pain. Other studies have found no significant difference in effectiveness between the two.
What is Picosulfate/Magnesium Oxide/Citric Acid (PM/Ca)? PM/Ca is a combination of sodium picosulfate, magnesium oxide, and citric acid. Sodium picosulfate stimulates bowel movements, while magnesium oxide and citric acid help increase water in the bowel, making it easier to pass stools.
PM/Ca vs. PEG:
Research has shown that PM/Ca is as effective as PEG for bowel preparation. Patients using PM/Ca generally tolerate the preparation process better than those using PEG.
Conclusion:
While PEG is the preferred option according to guidelines, its high cost can make it less accessible in some places. In this study, we aim to compare the effectiveness and patient tolerance of Sennoside A+B and PM/Ca since no direct comparison between these two preparations has been made before.

Split-Dose Regimen With Bisacodyl Increases the Quality of Bowel Preparation for Colonoscopy

The aim of the present study was to compare 2 different bowel preparations procedures (split-dose with PicoPrep and bisacodyl vs. same-day preparation with PicoPrep) in patients undergoing colonoscopy with regard to quality of bowel preparation, compliance, and willingness to repeat. A retrospective quasi-experimental investigation was conducted. Adults with outpatient diagnostic and surveillance colonoscopies were included. A total of 540 patients participated: group ‘split-dose with bisacodyl’ (n = 293) and group ‘same-day’ (n = 247). Patients in group ‘split-dose with bisacodyl’ had a higher chance for having an excellent quality of bowel preparation (21.2%; 95% CI [13.5, 28.9]) and a reduced risk of an incomplete colonoscopy (4.1%; 95% CI [1.2, 7.0]). Group ‘split-dose with bisacodyl’ drank more fluid, had more nightly visits to the bathroom, and had more bathroom stops on the way to the endoscopic site. No differences were found between groups regarding adenoma detection rate, withdrawal time, overall time of colonoscopy, well-being during cleansing, patient satisfaction, the professional's assessment of the patient's tolerability of colonoscopy, and willingness to repeat the bowel preparation process. The split-dose regimen with PicoPrep and bisacodyl is now the standard bowel preparation procedure for patients undergoing elective colonoscopy as it is superior to the same-day regimen with PicoPrep regarding colon cleansing and incomplete colonoscopy. Hence, the written and verbal information at our institution regarding the bowel preparation procedure was altered according to the split-dose regimen, emphasizing the importance of adequate oral fluid intake and complete intake of the solution in order to ensure a safe and effective procedure.

Effects of probiotic soy milk fermented by lactobacillus plantarum A7 (KC 355240) added with Cuminum Cyminum essential oil on fasting blood glucose levels, serum lipid profile and body weight in diabetic Wistar rats

BACKGROUND:

There is some separate evidence that probiotic soy milk and Cuminum cyminum (C. cyminum) have positive effects on the prevention and reduction of diabetic complications. While the impact of probiotic soymilk mixed with herbal essential oils has not been investigated so far, the objective of this study is to examine the effects of probiotic soy milk using Lactobacillus plantarum A7 (KC 355240) added with essential oil of C. cyminum on diabetic rats.

METHODS:

50 streptozotocin-nicotinamide (STZ-NA) induced diabetic Wistar rats were divided into five groups: Control group (C group), soy milk group (SM group), probiotic soy milk group (PSM group), soy milk containing essential oil of C. cyminum group (SMC group) and probiotic soy milk containing essential oil of C. cyminum group (PSMC group). The animals consumed these products (1 ml/day) for 30 days. The fasting blood glucose (FBS), the serum lipid levels, and body weight variation were analyzed in 10-day intervals.

RESULTS:

FBS, total cholesterol (TC) and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) decreased significantly, whereas high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) increased in the PSMC group compared with that of other groups (P < 0.05). This product also led to weight gain (P < 0.05).

CONCLUSIONS:

A mixture of probiotic soy milk and herbal essential oil consumption could impose a positive effect on reducing FBS as well as serum lipid profile in STZ- NA diabetes-induced rat. Also, it results in an increase in their weight gain.

Preparation and application of a molecular capture for safety detection of cosmetics based on surface imprinting and multi-walled carbon nanotubes

A novel composite material for prednisone molecular capture (PS-MC) was prepared by surface imprinting technique in combination with a polyethylene filter plate coated with multi-walled carbon nanotubes for the first time. PS-MC was achieved by using prednisone as the template molecule, 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane as the monomer, and tetraethoxysilane as the cross-linker. The structure, morphology, and thermal stability of the prepared PS-MC were studied by fourier-transform infrared spectrometry, field emission scanning electron microscopy, energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, and thermogravimetric analysis. PS-MC was assessed by re-binding experiments such as adsorption kinetics, adsorption isotherms, molecular identification, and applied to the separation and enrichment of prednisone in cosmetics. The results indicated that PS-MC has rapid binding kinetic, high adsorption capacity, and favorable reusability. The imprinted materials were coupled with HPLC to selectively separation, purification, and detection of prednisone from spiked cosmetic samples. The recoveries of spiked cosmetic samples were in the range of 83.0-106.0%, with relative standard deviations of less than 2.10%, and the limit of detection of 5 ng/mL (S/N = 3).
