25 January 2021 Pfizer and BioNTech announced an advance purchase agreement to supply 40 million doses of their Covid-19 vaccineCovid-19 vaccine to the COVAX facility. COVAX was set up by the WHO, CEPI and Gavi to ensure equitable access to Covid-19 vaccines to every country in the world. The doses are expected to be delivered through 2021 with the first deliveries expected in the first quarter. Pfizer and BioNTech will deliver the vaccine to the COVAX facility at a not-for-profit price. Novavax announced that it has finalised a purchase agreement with the Canadian government to supply approximately 76 million doses of NVX-CoV2373, the company’s protein-based Covid-19 vaccineCovid-19 vaccine. The country has agreed to purchase 52 million doses of the vaccine, with an option to buy an additional 24 million doses. The vaccine candidate is currently being studied in Phase III clinical development. Scotland-based Elasmogen and researchers from the University of Minnesota announced a collaboration to identify protein-based drugs that are capable of fighting Covid-19. Initial funding for the new approach has been provided by the Scottish Government and coordinated by the University of Aberdeen. Elasmogen’s new anti-Covid-19 spike protein VNAR drugs block the virus. South Africa’s health regulator has authorised the Serum Institute of India to supply the Covid-19 vaccineCovid-19 vaccine being developed by the University of Oxford and AstraZeneca. This comes after the South African Health Products Regulatory Authority approved the vaccine.
