Furosemide is a small molecule drug that belongs to the class of NKCC2 inhibitors, which block the activity of the sodium-potassium-chloride co-transporter in the ascending loop of Henle in the kidney. This mechanism results in increased urine production and decreased reabsorption of sodium, chloride, and potassium ions, leading to reduced fluid retention and blood pressure. Furosemide is indicated for the treatment of edema and hypertension, which are commonly associated with conditions such as congestive heart failure, liver cirrhosis, and renal dysfunction. Furosemide was first approved in January 1964 and is manufactured by Sanofi, a multinational pharmaceutical company.
