Introduction

An infection of the eyes characterized by the presence in conjunctival epithelial cells of inclusion bodies indistinguishable from those of trachoma. It is acquired by infants during birth and by adults from swimming pools. The etiological agent is CHLAMYDIA TRACHOMATIS whose natural habitat appears to be the genito-urinary tract. Inclusion conjunctivitis is a less severe disease than trachoma and usually clears up spontaneously.

The Effect of Oral Azithromycin in the Treatment of Chlamydial Conjunctivitis

Chlamydia trachomatis is one of the major causes of sexually transmitted disease and also the leading infectious cause of blindness in the world.Treatment of C. trachomatis eye infection has involved for a long time. The efficacy of single dose azithromycin has already been demonstrated as effective in the treatment of both trachoma and adult inclusion conjunctivitis.However, in our clinical experience, some patients of chlamydial conjunctivitis may require augmented single dose azithromycin treatments before C. trachomatis is eradicated. In this way, we would like to known the efficacy of single dose and augmented single dose azithromycin in the treatment of chlamydial conjunctivitis.

A rare case of primary unilateral conjunctival small lymphocytic lymphoma: A case report

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCEOrbital lymphomas, are extranodal lymphomas primarily involving the ocular adnexa, which includes conjunctiva, eyelids, eyelashes, eyebrows, lacrimal glands, retro-orbital soft tissues, and the extraocular muscles. Ocular adnexal lymphomas can be primary or secondary. This case is important because there are few case reports in the world, and it is among the first case to be reported from Ethiopia.CASE PRESENTATIONOur case is a 32-year-old female patient from the Ethiopia who has presented with painless slowly growing conjuctival mass over the left eye. Histopathologic and IHC examination confirm the diagnosis of primary conjuctival small lymphocytic lymphoma (SLL).CLINICAL DISCUSSIONThe majority of Ocular adnexal lymphomas are unilateral, with bilateral lesions occurring in about 7 %-24 % of all cases. Ocular adnexal lymphomas are mostly low-grade B-cell non-Hodgkin lymphomas, with approximately half being extranodal marginal zone B-cell lymphomas, with small lymphocytic lymphomas being much less common. The treatment options include radiotherapy, immunotherapy, chemotherapy, or a combination of these treatments. The gold standard treatment of isolated conjunctival lymphoma after resection is localized external-beam radiation therapy.CONCLUSIONSLLs of the ocular adnexa are rare, especially in the conjunctiva, with few cases reported in the published literature. The treating physician's should consider primary lymphomas are a possible cause of salmon colored mass in the conjunctiva specially those having history of chronic conjunctivitis. Histopathology with immunohistochemistry confirms the diagnosis of ocular lymphoma.

Neonatal conjunctivitis at a Brazilian tertiary center: the current relevance of Chlamydia trachomatis

PURPOSEThe microbiology pattern of neonatal conjunctivitis has changed over time, and the incidence of gonococcal conjunctivitis is almost nil. This study aimed to determine the etiology of neonatal conjunctivitis cases referred to a tertiary health center in Brazil.METHODSFrom 2017 to 2020, conjunctival swabs were taken from neonates with clinical signs of conjunctivitis and tested with bacterial culture and polymerase chain reaction for Neisseria gonorrhoeae and Chlamydia trachomatis.RESULTSA total of 51 neonates were included in the 3-year study. Chlamydial conjunctivitis was diagnosed in 39 (76.5%) patients, and microbial growth was detected in 13 (25.5%) patients. The most isolated bacterium was Staphylococcus epidermidis (n=6, 11.8%), followed by other coagulase-negative Staphylococcus species (n=4, 7.8%) and S. aureus (n=2, 3.9%). One S. aureus isolate was resistant to oxacillin. There were no cases of gonococcal conjunctivitis. Ten (19.6%) patients showed polymerase chain reaction-negative C. trachomatis and negative bacterial culture test results.CONCLUSIONFindings show that C. trachomatis is the most common pathogen causing neonatal conjunctivitis. The high prevalence of C. trachomatis infection highlights the importance of screening and treating pregnant woman.

The role of inflammatory periocular, ocular surface and systemic diseases in involutional ectropion

BACKGROUNDThis study investigated the association between involutional ectropion and chronic inflammatory diseases of the eyelid and ocular surface, and other systemic diseases.METHODSThis case-control study was conducted using electronic medical records from Clalit Health Services in Israel, 2001-2022. Patients diagnosed with involutional ectropion were compared to two control groups: one with senile cataracts and another with other ophthalmic diseases. The groups were matched 1:3 by birth year, sex, and ethnicity. Mixed models were used to assess differences in demographics, periocular, ocular, and systemic diseases between the groups. Conditional logistic regression was used to estimate the odds ratios (OR) and adjust for confounders.RESULTSA total of 1786 patients with involutional ectropion and 5358 matched individuals in each control group were included. The average age of the patients with involutional ectropion was 77 ± 10 years, and 60% were men. Significant associations were found between involutional ectropion and several inflammatory diseases: blepharitis (OR 4.25, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 3.68-4.91), chalazion (OR 3.01, 95% CI: 2.3-3.94), hordeolum (OR 2.27, 95% CI: 1.8-2.86), dermatitis of the eyelid (OR 1.69, 95% CI: 1.16-2.47), chronic conjunctivitis (OR 3.49, 95% CI: 2.86-4.26), pterygium (OR 2.21, 95% CI: 1.71-2.86), hypertension (OR 1.5, 95% CI: 1.31-1.72), dyslipidaemia (OR 1.46, 95% CI: 1.3-1.64), and rheumatic disease (OR 1.9, 95% CI: 1.5-2.4).CONCLUSIONSPeriocular, ocular surface, and systemic inflammatory diseases are independent risk factors for involutional ectropion. Further research is necessary to fully understand these associations.
