This study aims to investigate the color tone and fluorescence changes that may occur during fixed orthodontic treatment with brackets in patients' teeth using toothpaste with different properties. The study will include routinely taken three-dimensional models, fluorescence photographs, gingival index, periodontal index, ICDAS II, and DMFT index records of patients who have received orthodontic treatment at Erciyes University Faculty of Dentistry and who have been using the same toothpaste for a long time. Three different toothpaste groups were determined to be included in the study. These toothpastes will be examined in three groups: those with fluoride effect, those containing lactoperoxidase, and those without fluoride, which are routinely used by patients. It was decided that there would be 15 individuals in each group in case individuals were excluded from the clinical study to be conducted. As a result, 45 patients, 15 in each group, will be included in the study. This study will use digital models obtained by scanning the upper and lower jaws of the patients included using an intraoral scanner (3shape TRIOS). The reason for this is to evaluate whether there will be a change in the color of the patient's teeth during the orthodontic treatment process by comparing them with the records taken in the later stages of the treatment. Photographic records of the patients will also be taken with the Quantitative Laser-Induced Fluorescence (QLF) device. With this device, the fluorescence color change that occurs on the tooth surfaces will be examined.

The Effect of Toothpaste Containing Aloe Vera on Clinical and Microbiological Out Comes With Measuring IL_1 β in Gingival Crevicular Fluid: a Randomized Controlled Crossover Clinical Trial

Twenty-four adult patients (male and female) with generalized gingivitis participated in the double-blinded randomized crossover trial was divided into two groups, (aloe vera and Colgate toothpaste). a week after receiving polishing and scaling,24hours plaque re-growth, one group received Aloe Vera toothpaste twice times daily and the second group received Colgate toothpaste twice daily. The first visit included PLI measurement after that Investigator removed the supra gingival plaque by cotton roll to avoid contamination with the PERIOPAPER strip during GCF collection, then GCF collected from targeted sites(upper incisors, labial side)and Unstimulated saliva collected (for early colonizer bacterial load S. sanguinis and S. mutant) after that the other clinical periodontal parameters ( BOP) were measured and then scaling was done after sample collection because of gingival bleeding which occur during scaling then inform the patient to use the coded toothpaste which gave to the participant by the assistant not involve in the study so the researcher did not know the type of toothpaste that was given to the participant (Colgate or aloe vera twice daily).The toothpastes was given for one week .The codded toothpaste was gave randomly by a decision on that day for example on Sunday Investigator gave all the participants code 1 and on other days Investigator gave to other participants code 2 .In the second visit the PLI was measured first , then the samples were collected from the same teeth after that the other periodontal parameters were collected again ( BOP). After that, participants entered a 6-day wash out period and they were asked to resume oral hygiene measures. After the washout period, the same protocol was repeated for other type of toothpaste.

According to the US Surgeon General's report, "Oral Health in America," published in 2000, most adults in the United States show some degree of periodontal pathology, with severe periodontal diseases affecting about 14% of middle-aged adults. Periodontal diseases are polymicrobial-induced inflammatory diseases, and they vary from mild gingival inflammation to severe deterioration of the periodontium, ie, loss of periodontal supportive tissues and, ultimately, tooth loss. New evidence shows that periodontal diseases may impact systemic health. For this reason, the maintenance of a healthy mouth is becoming increasingly important for the overall health of the body. This article summarizes laboratory research conducted during the development of a novel, multibenefit, oral-care technology based on triclosan--a broad-spectrum antibacterial agent--and a polyvinylmethylether/maleic acid copolymer. This unique combination of agents is found in Colgate Total, a clinically proven efficacious dentifrice for control of dental plaque and gingivitis. Data are presented that demonstrate the unique antibacterial properties of this dentifrice: (1) a broad-spectrum antimicrobial profile; (2) the long-lasting retention of triclosan on hydroxyapatite and epithelial cells; and (3) molecular evidence of antibacterial activity against specific pathogens in clinical dental plaque. In addition, data are presented that demonstrate the anti-inflammatory effects of triclosan on specific cytokines, the interruption of inflammatory pathways, and the inhibition of bone resorption. Overall, these data support the multibenefit clinical effects of Colgate Total and suggest a plurality of mechanisms of action.

AbstractObjectives: Toothpastes are good vehicles for antibacterial substances to exert a prolonged effect. This effect depends on the substantivity and ability to interfere with plaque metabolism and/or vitality. It was the purpose of this clinical, randomized 2 × 4 cell crossover study to evaluate and to compare the antibacterial effects of two toothpastes (Colgate Total®, COL and Parodontax®, PAR) applied as slurries on established plaque over 24 h (Part I) and their effect on 4‐day plaque regrowth (Part II). Chlorhexamed® (0.1%; CHX) and water served as positive and negative controls.Material and methods: After professional toothcleaning eight students were asked to refrain from all mechanical hygiene measures for the next 72 h. After 48 h plaque was sampled and vitality of the plaque flora examined (baseline, VF0%). The subjects then rinsed for 1 min with 15 mL of one of the test or control solutions. Every second hour up to 14 h and 24 h after rinsing, plaque sampling and staining was performed to assess plaque vitality (VF2‐24, Part I). In Part II, the classical 4‐day plaque regrowth design was used with two rinses (1 min) a day as the only oral hygiene measure. Vitality values were assessed on day 1 and day 4 (VF1, VF2). At day 4, teeth were stained to assess the whole mouth plaque index (PlI) and to evaluate the percentage of plaque area (PA) of the anterior teeth.Results: Compared to placebo, all active rinses reduced plaque vitality significantly over a period of 24 h (Part I). PAR, COL and CHX revealed reductions of 18–31%, 28–50% and 19–50%, respectively. In Part II, similar reductions of all parameters were found for all active rinses (PAR 12–30%, COL 34–51%, CHX 40–64%).Conclusions: Colgate Total has shown a significant action on plaque regrowth and a high substantivity during 24 h, while Parodontax revealed a more moderate but still significant effect.

Triclosan (TCS), a broad-spectrum antimicrobial agent, has been widely used in personal care products, medical products, plastic cutting boards, and food storage containers. Colgate Total® toothpaste, containing 10 mM TCS, is effective in controlling biofilm formation and maintaining gingival health. Given its broad usage, TCS is present ubiquitously in the environment. Given its strong lipophilicity and accumulation ability in organisms, it is potentially harmful to biohealth. Several reports suggest the toxicity of this compound, which is inserted in the class of endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs). In September 2016, TCS was banned by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the European Union in soap products. Despite these problems, its application in personal care products within certain limits is still allowed. Today, it is still unclear whether TCS is truly toxic to mammals and the adverse effects of continuous, long-term, and low concentration exposure remain unknown. Indeed, some recent reports suggest the use of TCS as a repositioned drug for cancer treatment and cutaneous leishmaniasis. In this scenario it is necessary to investigate the advantages and disadvantages of TCS, to understand whether its use is advisable or not. This review intends to highlight the pros and cons that are associated with the use of TCS in humans.
