caries-free (CF) individuals caries-active (CA) individuals (DMFT ≥ 6) will be recruited. Subjects will be instructed to brush their teeth twice daily for 3 min using Colgate® Sensitive Pro-Relief® toothpaste (containing 8% arginine and 1450 ppm NaF) for 2 weeks. Supra- and subgingival plaque, saliva, and in situ plaque samples will be collected before and after the treatment for laboratory analyses.

Effects of natural products-based dentifrices on acrylic resin for denture bases: A simulated period of 4 years.

PURPOSETo evaluate the antimicrobial activity of dentifrices based on Malva sylvestris and propolis and the effect on the acrylic resin.METHODSThe inhibitory effect against Candida albicans, Enterococcus faecalis and Streptococcus mutans was determined. The specimens of resin were divided into groups: Control (brushing with distilled water); brushing with Colgate; brushing with Protex; brushing with Malvatricin, brushing with Proporalcare Dental Gel and brushing with Green Propolis Dental Gel. Brushing was carried out in a brushing machine. Roughness and color were assessed. The data were analyzed by ANOVA, followed by the Bonferroni post test (α= 0.05).RESULTSThe products evaluated showed antimicrobial activity against all microorganisms (P< 0.05), except Proporalcare Dental Gel, which was not effective against E. faecalis. Greater roughness (P< 0.05) was observed in the samples treated with Colgate. The samples from control and Protex groups showed the lowest color variation and the highest luminosity, with a difference in relation to the others (P< 0.05), which showed higher values, although clinically acceptable.CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCEThe dentifrices based on natural products can be indicated for cleaning prostheses, since they showed antimicrobial activity and did not cause perceptible color changes of the resin tested. The dentifrices did not produce adverse effects on the surface of the resin or did so less than the conventional dentifrice.

Development of toothpaste formulations containing mineral clays as abrasive agents and their effects on the physical properties of dental enamel

AbstractTo assess the physical properties and topographical aspect of dental enamel's surface microhardness (KHN), surface roughness (Ra), and color parameters CIELAB (∆Eab*), CIEDE 2000 (∆E00), and whiteness index for dentistry (∆WID) after toothbrushing with experimental toothpaste formulations with the following mineral clay types: kaolin, Sparclay SGY, and Tersil CGY used as abrasive component. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) was performed for topographical analyses purposes. A total of 96 bovine incisors were used in the experiment. They were divided into eight experimental groups (n = 12), namely: NC—negative control (no treatment), CT12—Colgate Total 12®, CMP—Colgate® Máxima Proteção Anticáries, K—kaolin experimental toothpaste, SGY—Sparclay SGY experimental toothpaste; CGY—Tersil CGY experimental toothpaste, SD—SiO2 experimental toothpaste, and CC—CaCO3 experimental toothpaste. All samples were subjected to mechanical brushing protocol with 5000 cycles and kept in artificial saliva with daily exchanges. KHN was analyzed through the mixed linear model for repeated measures over time. Ra was analyzed through nonparametric Kruskal Wallis and Dunn tests to compare the groups. Paired Wilcoxon test was run to compare experimental times. ∆WID, ∆Eab*, and ∆E00 were analyzed through Kruskal Wallis and Dunn tests. All analyses were performed in R* software, at 5% significance level. EXP_SGY recorded higher KHN than EXP_SiO2 and EXP_CaCO3, whereas EXP_K showed increased Ra in comparison to CMP (p = 0.0229). ∆Eab and ∆E00 were significantly higher in the CT12, EXP_SiO2, and EXP_CaCO3 groups than in the NC and EXP_K (p < 0.0001). There were no significant changes in ∆WID (p = 0.0852). According to SEM results, toothbrushing with experimental toothpastes added with mineral clay types did not have significant impact on enamel's polishing and smoothness.Clinical RelevanceMineral clays have a broad application in the cosmetic industry, and recently, they have been used in the formulation of vegan toothpaste.

Influence of Five Different Commercially Available Mouthwashes on the Growth of Candida albicans Adhered to Customized Prefabricated Heat-Cured Denture Base Acrylic Resin Sheets: An In Vitro Study

Background The purpose of this in vitro investigation was to evaluate the impact of five distinct commercial mouthwashes on the development of Candida albicans that had been adhered to heat-cured acrylic resin sheets. Methods This in vitro investigation was carried out at the MES Medical College's Microbiology Department in Perinthalmanna, Kerala, India. A total of 72 heat-cured acrylic resin sheets, size 10 × 10 × 2 mm, were fabricated. After disinfection, all 72 acrylic sheets were placed in a flask containing a suspension of the standard strain of Candida species (American Type Culture Collection) and incubated at 37ºC for 24 hours. Then, the acrylic sheets were randomly divided into six groups, with each group containing 12 acrylic sheets. Group 1 was the control group to which no mouthwash was added. In group 2, Colgate Plax was added. In group 3, Hiora Himalaya was added. In group 4, Oral B was added. In group 5, Listerine was added. In group 6, Pepsodent was added. Colony-forming units (CFUs) were assessed using a colony counter every six, 24, 48, and 120 hours. After obtaining the pH and CFU of all 72 specimens, software known as the Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) (IBM Corp., Armonk, NY) was used to analyze the data. Results Candida albicans adhered to heat-cured denture base acrylic resin sheets differed significantly in response to commercially available mouthwashes (Oral B, Colgate Plax, and Pepsodent) and non-commercial mouthwashes (Hiora Himalaya and Listerine) that contained cetylpyridinium chloride. Conclusions Compared to other mouthwashes that do not contain cetylpyridinium chloride (Listerine and Hiora Himalaya), mouthwashes with cetylpyridinium chloride as the active ingredient (Oral B, Pepsodent, and Colgate Plax) have shown good antifungal properties against the adhering Candida albicans on denture base resin.
