Emphysema is a progressive phenotype of chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD), poses a significant global health burden characterized by irreversible lung parenchymal destruction and airspace enlargement.
In recent years, bronchoscopic lung volume reduction (BLVR) has considerable interest as a minimally invasive approach to reducing hyperinflation and improving lung function in patients with emphysema.
BLVR techniques aim to achieve lung volume reduction by occluding or ablating emphysematous lung tissue through endobronchial delivery of various agents. Many techniques are available for BLVR as coil, endo-bronchial valve, and biological as thrombin, autologous blood and chemicals as silver nitrate solution.

Novel magnetic and metallic nanoparticles garner much attention of researchers due to their biological, chemical and catalytic properties in many chemical reactions. In this study, we have successfully prepared a core-shell Fe₃O₄@SiO₂@PDA nanocomposite wrapped with Ag using a simple synthesis method, characterised and tested on small cell lung cancer and antibacterial strains. Incorporating Ag in Fe₃O₄@SiO₂@PDA provides promising advantages in biomedical applications. The magnetic Fe₃O₄ nanoparticles were coated with SiO₂ to obtain negatively charged surface which is then coated with polydopamine (PDA). Then silver nanoparticles were assembled on Fe₃O₄@SiO₂@PDA surface, which results in the formation core-shell nanocomposite. The synthesised nanocomposite were characterized using SEM-EDAX, dynamic light scattering, XRD, FT-IR and TEM. In this work, we report the anticancer activity of silver nanoparticles against H1299 lung cancer cell line using MTT assay. The cytotoxicity data revealed that the IC₅₀ of Fe₃O₄@SiO₂@PDA@Ag against H1299 lung cancer nanocomposites cells was 21.52 µg/mL. Furthermore, the biological data of nanocomposites against Gram-negative 'Pseudomonas aeruginosa' and Gram-positive 'Staphylococcus aureus' were carried out. The range of minimum inhibitory concentration was found to be 115 µg/mL where gentamicin was used as a standard drug. The synthesized AgNPs proves its supremacy as an efficient biomedical agent and AgNPs may act as potential beneficial molecule in lung cancer chemoprevention and antibacterial strains.

The increasing prevalence of multidrug-resistant microorganisms in poultry has led to a rise in bacterial infections, causing significant economic loss. Green nanotechnology, such as silver nanoparticles (AgNPs), has the potential to address this issue by providing potent antifungal, antiviral, and antibacterial properties. This study explored the combined potential of AgNPs and the local herb Swertia chirayita against established poultry pathogens, employing a non-factorial Central Composite Design (CCD) to evaluate the factors affecting the production of nanoparticles induced by silver nitrate from the selected herb. The optimal values for temperature, wavelength, silver nitrate concentration, incubation duration, and pH were found to produce the highest nanoparticles. The functional groups in Swertia chirayita stimulated nanoparticles were confirmed using FTIR spectroscopy, and the stability of ScNPs was elucidated using zeta potential. The crystalline structure of ScNPs was confirmed using diffraction intensity patterns. Silver nanoparticles demonstrated antibacterial activity against Salmonella spp. and Escherichia coli (E.coli), both known as significant poultry pathogens, using the agar well diffusion method, with inhibition zones of 25.0 mm and 35.0 mm, respectively.This study explored the green manufacturing of silver nanoparticles by using plants and microorganisms, focusing on their antibacterial properties. The exact mechanism of synthesis and action in AgNPs is still poorly understood. Researchers should prioritize the use of accessible, easy-to-extract plants or bacteria, especially non-pathogenic and fast-growing microorganisms for safe handling. Analyzing biomolecules in plant extract, microbial biomass, or culture supernatants, including probiotic bacteria, is crucial for creating and stabilizing AgNPs, which could be effective synthetic agents. It is crucial to optimize conditions for rapid, stable, and large-scale synthesis. Based on this research, Sc-NPs may be proposed as nanomedicine for treating infections in poultry caused by E. coli and Salmonella spp.

Synthesis of cytocompatible gum Arabic–encapsulated silver nitroprusside nanocomposites for inhibition of bacterial pathogens and food safety applications

Silver nitroprusside (AgN) exhibits significant antibacterial activity; however, its inherent toxicity poses a major concern. This study synthesized AgN with enhanced antibacterial properties while minimizing toxicity. Gum Arabic (GA), a natural polysaccharide widely utilized in food and biomedical applications owing to its exceptional cytocompatibility, was selected for encapsulating AgN to mitigate toxicity while preserving or enhancing its biological activity. The resulting composite material, GA-AgN nanocomposites (NCs), was systematically characterized using various analytical techniques. Transmission electron microscopy analysis revealed that GA-AgN NCs exhibited a rectangular morphology, with an average size of 230.13 ± 62.8 nm. The zeta potential of GA-AgN NCs was measured at -29.3 ± 0.70 mV. Furthermore, GA-AgN NCs demonstrated stability over diverse storage durations, incubation periods, and pH conditions by maintaining its size and surface charge. X-ray diffraction results indicated a reduction in the crystallinity of AgN when incorporated into the amorphous GA matrix, while Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy analysis confirmed that the functional properties of both AgN and GA were preserved in the NCs. The release of Ag and Fe ions from the NCs was observed to be time- and pH-dependent. Importantly, the incorporation of GA did not compromise the antibacterial or antibiofilm efficacy of AgN against bacterial pathogens. Additionally, GA significantly mitigated the cytotoxic effects of AgN on NIH3T3 cells and red blood cells. Furthermore, GA-AgN NCs effectively extended the shelf-life of Salmonella enterica-infected green grapes. Thus, this study illustrates that GA-fabricated AgN NCs exhibit potential as an antibacterial agent in food preservation applications.

Orthobond wins FDA de novo approval for antibacterial technology that could have vast device applications

The Monmouth Junction, New Jersey-based device developer says it’s the first time the FDA has granted a de novo request for a non-eluting coating designed to actively kill bacteria that could contaminate the surface of a medical device. Orthobond was founded by Princeton University Chemistry Professor Emeritus Jeffrey Schwartz and the late Dr. Gregory Lutz, who was physiatrist-in-chief emeritus at the Hospital for Special Surgery. Lutz died of cancer on March 5, but knew FDA approval was on the horizon. Orthobond CEO David Nichols called the FDA approval a “testament to Gregory’s legacy” in a statement shared with MassDevice. “We are proud to be able to carry it on into this next chapter.” The first application will be Ostaguard-treated SeaSpine Mariner pedicle screws, according to FDA records. Those could be used in patients early next year, Nichols (a former Zimmer Biomet executive) said in an exclusive interview with MassDevice. Orthobond’s proprietary technology is a quaternary ammonium compound coating that’s highly effective in neutralizing the different bacteria responsible for most device-related infections and can be applied to almost any device, he said. Where applied, the coating is intended to reduce microbial contamination on the surface of the device prior to implantation. The device does not contain antimicrobial agents that act within or on the body and this device type does not include combination products.” According to an approval letter shared by Ostaguard, the FDA classified the product as a Class II device and established special controls, which Orthobond declined to divulge. While Orthobond said it found no evidence of local or systemic toxicity in sheep, guinea pig and canine testing, the coating technology has not been evaluated in human clinical trials. Orthobond says the technology’s intellectual property is protected through 2037 through three patent fences covering the covalent surface chemistry, antimicrobial layer and analytical processes, including 27 patents and 12 pending applications. Orthobond intends to seek 510(k) clearances for additional orthopedic spinal implant indications before expanding to other fields such as joint reconstruction, oncology, sports medicine, plastic surgery and cardiovascular. “We’re working on a neuromodulation device, there’s a trauma device we’re working on, and we’re going to work on a cochlear implant,” Nichols said. “If you use a cochlear implant and it gets infected, you pretty much lose your hearing. That’s something that they want to solve.” “We’d like to be as broad as possible,” he continued. “… This should be on all devices that get used. There’s no reason why not.
