Objective: To investigate the effects of Pien Tze Huang (PZH) in relieving alcoholism. Methods: Forty-eight male Sprague-Dawley rats were equally and randomly divided into normal control group, model group, low-dose PZH group, middle-dose PZH group, high-dose PZH group, and Hai Wang Jin Zun (HWJZ) group (as a pos. control). The HWJZ group and the PZH groups were given HWJZ (300 mg/kg) and PZH (360 mg/kg, 180 mg/kg, 90 mg/kg), resp., by gavage, and then they were given alc. (5 mL/kg) by gavage at 0.5 h after the treatments. The normal control group and the model group were given an equal volume of saline by gavage, and then they were given saline (5 mL/kg) and alc. (5 mL/kg), resp., by gavage at 0.5 h after the treatments. The blood of all rats was collected to determine the content of alc. at 0.5, 1, 2, 3, and 5 h after giving alc. with headspace gas chromatog.-mass spectrometer. Results At 1 h after giving alc., the content of alc. in the blood reached the peak level, and then it fell along over time. The content was lowest at 5 h after giving alc. PZH significantly decreased the content of alc. in the blood with a significant dose-effect relationship, and the low-dose PZH showed the best effect. The decrease in the content of alc. in the blood was significantly larger in the PZH groups than in the HWJZ group. Conclusion PZH can promote the alc. metabolism
